1,2-Ethanediamine platinum complex

The synthesis of the cts-dichlorobis(1,2-ethanediamine)platinum(IV) ion was first claimed by Heneghan and Bailar. Later, Liu and Doyle reported the optical resolution, physical (IR, NMR, and ORD) and chemical characterization of the complex ion, expressing doubt that the Heneghan and Bailar procedure worked. Liu and Ibers confirmed the characterization of the resolved complex with an X-ray diffraction study, and Liu and Yoo reported some of its substitution reactions. The details of the synthesis of this complex ion do not appear in refs. 2 to 4, but only in a more obscure reference. Perhaps because of this, little work with this interesting complex has appeared, and some workers have attempted to use the original Heneghan and Bailar synthesis, which, according to Liu, yields only the trans isomer.

Extensive use of vicinal proton-proton couplings has been made by Fraenkel and Qiu in their studies on the structure and dynamic behaviour of several methyl substituted allylic lithium compounds, by Shestakova et who studied the structure of the complex between lanthanum(III) nitrate and 1,9 diaza-18-crown-6, and by Goto et whose subjects of interest have been square-planar ternary platinum(II) complexes with A -ethyl- or A -benzyl-1,2-ethanediamine and 2,2 -bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline. 

A series of highly stable platinum (II) and platinum (IV) pyrophosphate complexes containing ammine, tra 5-l,2-cyclohexanediamine and 1,2-ethanediamine as the amine ligands has been synthesized by Mishur et al and characterized by the use of NMR including /ppt couplings whose values varied from about 15 to 26 Hz. It is worth noting that the complexes studied exhibit excellent antitumor activities in human ovarian cells.
