Estradiol mimics

The compound shown is diethylstilbestrol (DES) it has a number of therapeutic uses in estrogen replacement therapy DES is not a steroid but can adopt a shape that allows it to mimic estrogens such as estradiol (p 1100) and bind to the same receptor sites Construct molecular models of DES and estradiol that illustrate this similanty in molecular size shape and location of polar groups...

As in the case with the estrogenic PCBs, the ability to mimic estrogen is an important structural key. The next paragraphs compare some of the estrogenic acting compounds to estradiol. 

Quinestrol (100 meg daily for 7 days), which mimics the action of endogenous estrogen, is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause, atrophic vaginitis, kraurosis vulvae, female hypogonadism, female castration, and primary ovarian failures. Quinestrol is stored in body fat, slowly released over several days, and metabolized to ethinyl estradiol.
