The better-known and widely used hallucinogenic plants are San Isidro mushroom Psilocyhe cubensis), ergot Claviceps), soma Amanita muscaria), peyote Cactus lophophora), yage (or ayahuasca), the vision vine of the Amazon Banisteriopsis caapi), cannabis Cannabis sativa and indica) and perhaps coca Erythroxylum novo-gratense).

Isolation of the Alkaloids from Culture of Ergot Claviceps purpurea [Fr] Tul.)... 

In a Japanese patent application (application No. 1676/50, publicized on June 5, 1950) a process was described according to which a certain strain or ergot Claviceps purpurea parriesta katagirii), which is obtained from grasses and not from rye, can be made to produce alkaloids in vitro. In the course of this work it appears that the authors did actually succeed in isolating a crystalline alkaloid on a preparative scale from cultures of this fungus. The alkaloid so obtained was not known... 

At that time we had not seen an excellent paper by Rostowzew which is written in Russian and in which he makes the point, by experiment, the sclerotia of ergot (Claviceps purpurea Tul.) preserve their vitality for one year only. This viability is lost in less than one year, if they are subjected to complete dr5dng out while in the resting stage. ...

In sorghum ergot, Claviceps africana, the sclerotia were thought to be rounded, 3-5 mm in diameter, with reddish brown spots, until another population of this fungus specialized on Hyparrhenia spp. was discovered (D. Frederickson and S. Pazoutova, unpublished), whose sclerotia are cylindrical and brown to black, 2-4 mm in length, and 0.5-1 mm wide.
