A solution of 793 mg (2 mmol) of (22Z)-ergosta-5,7,22-trien-3/J-ol (1) in 14 mL of peroxide-free dioxane is hydrogenated at 760 Torr over ca. 1.2 g of Raney nickel catalyst which has previously been saturated with H2. After 3 h, 105% (51 mL) of the theoretical quantity of H2 has been adsorbed and H2 uptake ceases. The reaction mixture is diluted with CHC13 and the catalyst is removed by filtration through a filter-aid. Concentration under reduced pressure affords nearly pure 2 yield 750 mg (94%). Recrystallization is from CH2CI2/CH3OH mp 173- 176 JC [a] 4-19.3 (c = 2.06, CHC1,). [Pg.965]
