We want to make the following remarks in connection with this special choice of density distributions  

It is decisive in the development of the main results in the statistical theory for the motion of gases. (Cf. note 172.) 

When Maxwell and Boltzmann first introduced these special density distributions, they justified them by referring explicitly to the hypothesis that the gas models are ergodic systems.102 

This special choice is generally taken over in the later literature, even though the ergodic hypothesis is then not even mentioned.108
