Among the emerging pollutants of industrial origin, Bisphenol A [2,2 bis(4-hydroxydiphenyl)pro-pane] (BPA) has special relevance since it was one of the first chemicals discovered to mimic estrogens as endocrine disrupters.147 This compound was first reported by Dianin in 1891.1411 BPA is produced in large quantities worldwide, mainly for the preparation of polycarbonates, epoxy resins, and unsaturated polyester-styrene resins.149 The final products are used in many ways, such as coatings on cans, powder paints, additives in thermal paper, in dental composite fillings, and even as antioxidants in plasticizers or polymerization inhibitors in polyvinyl chloride (PVC). To a minor extent, BPA is also used as precursor for flame retardants such as tetrabromobisphenol A or tetrabromobisphenol-S-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl) ether.150 This substance can enter the environment... [Pg.150]

The epoxy resin is a primary component in any epoxy adhesive formulation, and it is often referred to as the base polymer. However, it is certainly not the only or even not always the predominant component in influencing desirable end properties. Epoxy resins by themselves are often too rigid to provide the required properties such as flexibility, peel and impact strength, and thermal cycling resistance. As a result, they are often modified with other components or hybridized with other types of polymeric resins to provide these functions. [Pg.71]

The adhesive properties of epoxy resins coupled with their dielectric behavior have made them attractive to the electronic industry. The evaluation of thermally cured rubber modified epoxy thermosets has been the subject of recent studies (1, 2), which dealt with the dependence of morphology on the curing parameters, e.g., catalyst, cure schedule, time of gelation, etc. This work utilizes one of the new series of photocationic initiators (PCI) developed by Crivello, et al (3) which are presently commercially available. These onium salts initiate the reaction by absorbing the actinic radiation, generating radicals and producing a protonic acid. The radicals can lead to polymerization of olefinic moieties (4) while the acid initiates the polymerization of the epoxy groups (3). [Pg.345]
