Enzymes prosthetic groups

The alkynyl steroid (96) inactivates aromatase, an enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of androgen to estrogen. It has been suggested (81JA3221) that the inactivation process involves the oxidation of (96) to an oxirene which rearranges to an oxocarbene which then binds to the enzyme prosthetic group, thus inactivating it.

Prosthetic groups are tightly bound to enzymes and participate in the catalytic cycles of enzymes. Like any catalyst, an enzyme-prosthetic group complex undergoes changes during the reaction, bnt before it can catalyze another reaction, it must return to its original state. 

Plants produce a great variety of products based on a branched C5 budding block. Some of these are primary metabolites, such as steroids, and side chains of enzyme prosthetic groups, and are similar or identical to compounds synthesized by animals. Some are plant hormones, such as abscisic acid and gibberellins. Certain C40 carotenoids of plants are the ultimate source of vitamin A, essential for animal nutrition. However, the majority of the isoprenoid or terpenoid compounds synthesized by plants are secondary metabolites which are uniquely plant products.
