Environmental factors, treatment principles

The varying metabolic activities of bacteria and their response to immediate environmental factors have been exploited in the design of special diagnostic and selective media. Recipes for these run into many hundreds such media are used in hospital and public health laboratories for identifying organisms found in samples believed to be contaminated by them, and as an aid to diagnosis and treatment. In addition they are used to detect contaminants in pharmaceutical products (British Pharmacopoeia 1993). A few examples will be given to illustrate the principle. [Pg.18]

The second part deals with applications of solvent extraction in industry, and begins with a general chapter (Chapter 7) that involves both equipment, flowsheet development, economic factors, and environmental aspects. Chapter 8 is concerned with fundamental engineering concepts for multistage extraction. Chapter 9 describes contactor design. It is followed by the industrial extraction of organic and biochemical compounds for purification and pharmaceutical uses (Chapter 10), recovery of metals for industrial production (Chapter 11), applications in the nuclear fuel cycle (Chapter 12), and recycling or waste treatment (Chapter 14). Analytical applications are briefly summarized in Chapter 13. The last chapters, Chapters 15 and 16, describe some newer developments in which the principle of solvent extraction has or may come into use, and theoretical developments. [Pg.31]

The principles involved in producing bonds of optimum strength and durability are the same, irrespective of the nature of the adherends. The surface must be free of contamination, must be receptive to the adhesive (or primer, if used), and the adhesive/adherend interface formed must be stable to environmental exposure. It is the last mentioned factor that is of most concern in a discussion of the durability of adhesive bonds, particularly for metallic adherends. The prebond treatment of the metal surface is of paramount importance in determining joint performance. With wood and plastic adherends, long-term performance is usually determined by other factors, provided that good initial joints are formed. [Pg.367]
