Alkaloids are basic nitrogen compounds of great structural complexity which occur in plants. About two dozen of different classes of alkaloids are covered in the "Specialist Periodical Reports of the English Chemical Society. [Pg.289]

Since 1975, an annual report of the English Chemical Society, Carbohydrate Chemistry, has contained a chapter titled. Synthesis (from sugars) of Enantiomerically Pure Non-Carbohydrate Compounds. [Pg.237]

In 1907, the Faraday medal of the English Chemical Society was presented to Fisdier. This required a trip to England to deliver the Faraday lecture. A previous... [Pg.70]

Each manuscript should be submitted in duplicate to the secretary of the Editorial Board, Professor Stanley Kirschner, Department of Chemistry, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan 48202, U.S.A. The manuscript should be typewritten in English. Nomenclature should be consistent and should follow the recommendations presented in The Definitive Rules for Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 82, 5523 (1960). Abbreviations should conform to those used in publications of the American Chemical Society, particularly Inorganic Chemistry. [Pg.6]

With the Chemical Society s inauguration of its Journal in 1847, English chemists now had a specialized journal of record, which supplemented their previous outlets in the Philosophical Magazine (1798) and the Chemical Gazette (1843), the latter the predecessor of William Crookes s Chemical News (founded 1859). In the case of the Philosophical Magazine and the Chemical Gazette, we have a well-documented illustration of how the history of scientific journals and the history of the formation of disciplinary specialties overlap with business entrepreneurship, in this case, that of the publishing firm of Taylor and Francis. [Pg.63]

In the first half of the nineteenth century, institutions in metropolitan London dominated British teaching and research in chemistry. These institutions included the hospitals, the colleges of the University of London, the Royal Institution, the Royal College of Chemistry, and the Chemical Society of London, founded in 1841.2 The most prestigious English institutions, Oxford University and Cambridge University, did not encourage specialized scientific studies, especially not chemistry. [Pg.182]

Theobald, "Some Considerations on the Philosophy of Chemistry," Chemical Society Reviews 5 (1976) 203213. To his list, Hoffmann more recently added oxidation state and chemical stability in personal correspondence, letter of September 24, 1990. [Pg.294]

The nomenclature used throughout the book has been amended. The principal names are those adopted by the Chemical Society. Alternative names—which are in some cases the English equivalent of the usual German names, and in others are based on the Geneva System—are given in most instances to assist the student in making reference to the original literature. [Pg.552]
