Emitting polymers

A mixture consisting of 2,7-bis(thien-2-yl)-9,9-dipropylfluorene (5.55 mmol) dissolved in 25 ml of CCI3H was slowly treated with A-bromosuccinimide (12 mmol) and then refluxed for 1 hour. Thereafter the solution was diluted with 100 ml of CH2CI2, washed with 100 ml of water, 150 ml of 20% hydrochloric acid, 50 ml of saturated aqueous sodium bisulphite solution, and dried with MgS04. The mixture was concentrated then purified by re-crystallization using ethanol/CH2Cl2, and the product was isolated in 86% yield as yeUow-green crystals, MP = 160-165°C. [Pg.438]

Preparation of 2,7-bis(5- 4-[5-(l-allylbut-3-enyloxycarbonyl)pentyloxy] phenyl thien-2-yl)-9,9-dipropylfluorene [Pg.439]

A mixture of the Step 3 product (1.0mmol), l,6-heptadienyl-6-bromohexanoate (2.7 mmol), and potassium carbonate (3.6 mmol) dissolved in 25 ml of acetonitrile was refluxed for 20 hours, filtered, and the precipitate isolated and rinsed with 230 ml of CH2CI2. The solution was concentrated onto silica gel and purified by column chromatography using CH2Cl2/hexane, 1 1. The solid was re-crystallized [Pg.439]

The preparation of the Step 1 reagent, 2,7-bis(thien-2-y l)-9,9-dipropy Ifluorene, (I), was provided by the author [1] as illustrated below. [Pg.441]

Motivated by these considerations, our research group in Groningen has started investigating model compounds that are analogous to the chromophorcs in light-emitting polymers, in particular the copolymers that have recently been described [16]. [Pg.294]
