Figure 17-46 shows such a performance curve for the collection of coal fly ash by a pilot-plant venturi scrubber (Raben "Use of Scrubbers for Control of Emissions from Power Boilers, United States-U.S.S.R. Symposium on Control of Fine-Particulate Emissions from Industrial Sources, San Francisco, 1974). The scatter in the data reflects not merely experimental errors but actual variations in the particle-size characteristics of the dust. Because the characteristics of an industrial dust vary with time, the scrubber performance curve necessarily must represent an average material, and the scatter in the data is frequently greater than is shown in Fig. 17-46. For best definition, the curve should cover as wide a range of contacting power as possible. Obtaining the data thus requires pilot-plant equipment with the flexibility to operate over a wide range of conditions. Because scrubber performance is not greatly affected by the size of the unit, it is feasible to conduct the tests with a unit handling no more than 170 m3/h (100 ftVmin) of gas. Air pollution implications of pyrolysis are minimal with correct design and operation. VOC s in the gas can leak from pump seals, pipe flanges, valve stems, drains, and compressors. Particulate matter is generated from handling and processing the char. Emissions data from pyrolysis units are minimal, because many plants operate for short periods of time, and often only at pilot scale level. [Pg.314]

German Studies. Independent confirmation of the possibility of high particulate emissions being accompanied by low dioxin emissions is provided by the monitoring data collected on the TAMARA pilot MSW incineration plant at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre.22 The pilot plant was fitted with cyclones and a wet scrubber. The particulate and total PCDD/F concentrations in Table 2 are downstream of the cyclones but prior to the wet scrubber. If the reported PCDD/F concentrations are converted to toxic equivalents, values in the region of 1 ng I-TEQ m-3 would be obtained. The data indicate that particulate emission concentrations far in excess of present-day regulatory requirements can be accompanied by low PCDD/F emissions. [Pg.164]

The results from selected patents for the ammoxidation of propane to acrylonitrile are shown in Table 9.2. Significant advances have been made over the past 10 years. High conversions and selectivi-ties approaching 64% have been obtained. BP has announced that a pilot plant is operational to collect basic data for commercial design. The stake is high for this development because of the lower cost of propane compared to propylene and the reduction in CO2 emissions. [Pg.163]
