The formation of nanoporous molecular networks can be illustrated by an example in which tetrahedral tetracations are Unked by coulombic forces to linear dianions. This may lead to a diamond-like network not unlike the aforementioned 1,3,5,7-tetracarboxyadamantane structure. It is our goal here to describe the directing influence of electrostatic templates on anionic networks in crystalline materials, with a focus primarily on the structural aspects of these materials.
