Electrical isolation procedure

We began to look at safe electrical isolation procedures in Chapter 1 and then discussed this topic further in Chapter 8, together with safe manual handling techniques and safe procedures for working above ground. 

Before carrying out any inspections or maintenance procedures on belt drives, make sure they are not in operation. Equipment operators should electrically isolate the drive system and lock-out and tag the machine that is to undergo maintenance. Once this precaution has been taken, the belts and pulleys can be removed from the machine for inspection, cleaning, and repair. 

Immersing an electrochemical cell in a water bath creates problems. The procedure makes electrical isolation of the connections in the cell more difficult. Electrical leaks ate then encouraged and may cause errors of measurement. In any case, there are few measurements in which the added sensitivity to temperature control that a water thermostat implies is necessary. 

The overall strategy should take into consideration the nature of the matrix and the properties of the metabolites present. Relevant properties, to be investigated by appropriate analytical procedures Include hydrolytical stability, volatility, lipophilicity, solvent partition properties, electrical charge and susceptibility towards defined enzymes. A reliable analytical system providing efficient separation of individual metabolites present, needs to be established as early in the isolation procedure as possible. This analytical system is used to monitor the result of each single isolation step, and - of equal Importance - to recognize any artifact formation which may occur during the execution of that step. Two-dlrectlonal TLC and reversed phase HPLC are fast and, therefore, commonly used methods for this purpose. 

The safe isolation procedure described in Fig. 1.28 is a method statement. Following this method meets the requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations, the lET Regulations, and reduces the risk of electric shock to the operative and other people who might be affected by his actions.

Safe operating procedures for the isolation of plant and machinery during both electrical and mechanical maintenance, must be prepared and followed. All electrical isolators must, wherever possible, be fitted with mechanisms which can be locked in the open/off position and there must be a procedure to allow fuse withdrawal wherever isolators are not fitted.
