It has become recognized during recent years that the color of dyes is associated with the resonance of electric charge from atom to atom of the dye molecule.2,3> 4 6 6 Because of the complexity of the problem, however, it has not been easy to expand this idea into a theory of color permitting the rough quantitative calculation of the frequencies and intensities of the absorption bands of dyes. The concept of the oxidation state of an element in a chemical compound has a long and confusing history. In the most pretentious form of the concept the oxidation state or oxidation number is the electrical charge localised on the concerned atom in the compound. For ions, the valence equals the electrical charge. In molecules, the various atoms are assigned charge-like values so the sum of the oxidation numbers equals the charge on the molecule. For example, in the 412 molecule, each Fd has an oxidation number of + 1, and the O is —2. [Pg.39]

Two of the most common secondary structures found in proteins are helical and pleated-sheet conformations, shown in the diagram above. One might compare the helical structure of a protein, for example, with the spiral-shaped cord found on many home telephones.
