The navy s approach to superconducting ships is far different from Saji s. While the ST-500 bootstraps itself along using seawater as the power fluid, the craft the navy has christened Jupiter II runs on a superconductive motor which drives a propeller. Moreover, the ST-500 is a model that has done its tricks only in a test tank. Jupiter II, with a 400-HP motor and generator (later upgraded to 3,000 HP), was the first vessel in history to be propelled at sea by a completely superconducting electric drive system. 

In 2008, Boeing announced that it has, for the first time in aviation history, flown a manned airplane powered hy hydrogen fuel cells. The Fuel Cell Demonstrator Airplane used a proton exchange membrane fuel cell and Uthium-ion battery hybrid system to power an electric motor, which was coupled to a conventional propeller.

Here, one of several types of wind machines extracts the wind s energy and converts it into the mechanical motion needed to work a water pump. If there s a problem with this setup, another type of wind machine can be used to produce electricity to power a motor connected to a water pump. As far back in recorded history as you d care to go, wind has been harnessed to pump water. In some areas the wind is both constant and strong enough to guarantee water...
