Elder botany

Pliny the Elder, 23-79 A.D. Roman philosopher. Author of a Natural History in 37 books, in which he discussed the astronomy, geology, zoology, botany, agriculture, mineralogy, and medicine of his time. [Pg.9]

Etienne Fran9ois Geoffroy (aine, the elder) (Paris 13 February 1672-6 January 1731), the son of a wealthy apothecary, studied botany, chemistry, and anatomy in Paris. In 1692 he went to Montpellier to study pharmacy with an apothecary, whose son went to Paris to study with Geoffroy s father. He qualified as a pharmacist in 1693. He had been interested in chemistry by Homberg, a friend of his father. He visited London in 1698 as physician to Count Tallard, the Ambassador Extraordinary, and became F.R.S. he was a member of the Academy in 1699. After travels in Holland and Italy, where he went in 1700 as physician to M. de Louvois, he took over his father s business... [Pg.471]
