William Schopf studied supercrustal rock samples from Akilia Raman and ion microscopic photographs showed the presence of carbon-containing inclusions in grains of apatite. The carbon isotope ratio was determined by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) the 813C value was -29% 4%, in agreement with earlier analyses. This in turn confirmed the values obtained by Mojzsis (1996), which had been questioned by Lepland et al. three years later. The final verdict on the oldest fossils in western Greenland may not be reached for several years yet (McKeegan et al., 2007 Eiler, 2007). [Pg.263]

Consecutively, the heavy paraffins are cracked into lighter hydrocarbon fractions by hydro-cracking. For example, for the Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS) process, the liquid product stream is composed of 60% gasoil (diesel), 25% kerosene and 15% naphtha. The gaseous product mainly consists of LPG (a mixture of propane and butane) (Eilers et al., 1990). Figure 7.3 shows a simplified diagram comprising all process steps to produce synthetic hydrocarbons from biomass, natural gas and coal. [Pg.214]

Normal gas-source mass spectrometers do not allow meaningful abundance measurements of these very rare species. However, if some demands on high abundance sensitivity, high precision, and high mass resolving power are met, John EUer and his group (e.g., Eiler and Schauble 2004 Affek and Eiler 2006 EUer 2007) have reported precise (<0. l%c) measurements of CO2 with mass 47 (A47-values) with an especially modified, but normal gas-source mass spectrometer. A47-values are defined as %o difference between the measured abundance of all molecules with mass 47 relative to the abundance of 47, expected for the stochastic distribution. [Pg.15]

Several models for diffusive transport in and among minerals have been discussed in the literature one is the fast grain boundary (FGB) model of Eiler et al. (1992, 1993). The FGB model considers the effects of diffusion between non-adjacent grains and shows that, when mass balance terms are included, closure temperatures become a strong function of both the modal abundances of constituent minerals and the differences in diffusion coefficients among all coexisting minerals. [Pg.17]
