Education public health preparedness

The framework of the book is consistent with the United States National Response Plan, the National Incident Management System, and is based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s (GDC) Competencies for public health preparedness and the GDC Guidelines for response to chemical, biological, and radiological events. This textbook will provide nurses with a heightened awareness for disasters and mass casualty incidents, a solid foundation of knowledge (educational competencies) and a tool box of skills (occupational competencies) to respond in a timely and appropriate manner. 

As the founder of the International Nursing Coalition for Mass Casualty Education in March 2001 (now the Nursing Emergency Preparedness Education Coalition), which now represents over 80 nursing organizations, friends of nursing, and subject matter experts, 1 was not privy to any special vision. 1 knew that our public health infrastructure was rickety—at best—and that, in the event of any kind of mass casualty event, nurses would be expected to be in the forefront. 1 also...
