Education instructor selection

Most other software for chemical education is of the kind that an instructor would select for a class. Implicitly or explicitly the instructor says "Student, go use this program." GEORGE may lie in a very different realm in which the students rather than the instructors are the ones who choose the program. The difference could be one small step toward fulfilling the promise that computers hold for far-reaching changes in education. 

Herein it is hypothesized that one possible strategy to inerease both rates is to inerease the proportion of engineering instruetors who read the engineering education research literature and, hence, may feel more comfortable to incorporate some findings in their teaching. An additional premise of this article is that a selective, structured overview of the education literature may offer an engineering instructor a friendly point of entry. 

It is usually possible to substitute CH S related problems for others that might represent rote exercises. With proper selection, the incorporation of safety education can be done without the requirement of additional time, or the displacement of necessary topics. Most instructors spend some time in their courses presenting applications of the basic principles, or make some choices among optional material in the text. For example, references to environmental issues are often made. Some of these examples are in fact health and safety issues as well, and one can kill two birds with one stone with little extra effort. 

Involve your selected instructors as much as possible in developing the specific education and training plan. 

DPSOP 38 specifies the minimum education and experience requirements training instructors need in order to comply with DOE Order 5480.6, "Safety of DOE-Owned Reactors" (Reference 6), and to be consistent with commercial standards as defined in American Nuclear Society (ANS) Standard 3.1, "Selection, Qualification, and Training of Personnel for Nuclear Power Plants" (Reference 7).
