The Japanese species Ecklonia stolonifera allowed the isolation of two macrolactones, eddonialactones A and B, which can serve as a repellent against abalones, and which differ from other macrolactones of red algae only by the number of carbon atoms, involving a similar or identical biosynthesis starting from arachidonic acid (red algae) and stearidonic add (brown algae).
