The presence of other disease states may also affect response to treatment by limiting treatment options. The overall functional status of a patient may be assessed using performance status scales, such as the Karnofsky and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group scales (Table 124-9). These scales can be used to predict patient tolerance of chemotherapy, as well as to assess the effects of chemotherapy on the patient s level of activity and quality of hfe. In many cancers, performance status at diagnosis is the most important prognostic indicator.
