Easi-cult

A proposition belongs to science if we can say what kind of event we would accept as refutation (and this is easy in therapeutics). A proposition (or theory) that cannot clash with any possible or even conceivable event (evidence) is outside science, and this in general applies to cults everything is interpreted in terms of the theory of the cult the possibility that the basis of the cult is false is not entertained. This appears to be the case with medical cults, which join Freudianism, and indeed religions, as outside science (after Karl Popper). Willingness to follow where the evidence leads is a distinctive feature of conventional scientific medicine. [Pg.12]

The potassium salt can be prepared in low yield by fusing a mixture of potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) and selenium. This salt can also be made by dissolving selenium in cold or warm aqueous potassium cyanide. However, this method is troublesome because it is difl cult to crystallize selenocyanates from water without decomposition. The procedure described here yields a very pure product and is easy to carry out even with large amounts of materials. ... [Pg.186]

The second column in Table 1-1 lists the instrumental methods that arc based on the various physical and chemical properties. Be aware that it is not always easy to select an optimal method from among available instrumental techniques and their classical counterparts. Some instrumental techniques are more sensitive than classical techniques, but others are not. With certain combinations of elements or compounds, an instrumental method may be more selective, but with dt ].ets, a gravimetric or volumetric approach may suffer less interference. Generalizations on the basis of accuracy, convenience, or expenditure of time are equally dtlli-cult to draw. Nor is it necessarily true that instrumental procedures employ more sophisticated or more costly apparatus. [Pg.10]
