Erythrina corallodendron L. E. indica Lam. E. variegata L. San Hu Ci Tong Hai Tong Pi (Indian coral tree) (leaf, stem bark) Alkaloids.50 This herb is toxic. Anthelmintic, antisyphilitic, laxative, analgesic in arthritis, neuralgia, rheumatism. 

Recently, another combined alkaloid has been isolated, this time from the seeds of E, variegata L. (43). Hydrolysis of the alkaloid yielded 7 and since 64 was also positively identified in the extracts, it is possible that this alkaloid could be the complementary positional isomer of erysophorine. 

At about the same time, Ito et al. (22) reported the isolation of an alkaloid C,8Hi9N04 from E. indica Lam. (now classified as E. variegata L.) to which... 

Erysopitine (C17H2iN04) was isolated from E. variegata L. and its structure (50) assigned from spectroscopic evidence (J5). Conversion of 50 to erysotrine (1) (see Scheme 12) established the stereochemistry at C-3 and C-5, but the configuration at C-2 has not yet been defined. 

Of biogenetic interest (see Section V,A) was the isolation of erysodienone (58) along with A-norprotosinomenine (67) and protosinomenine (68) from E. lithosperma Blume (now E. variegata L.) (34, 35). Erysodienone had been previously synthesised (54, 66, 68), but this was the first report of its isolation... 

Erysophorine (12), an unusual alkaloid obviously of mixed biogenesis, has been isolated from E. arborescens. As well as five known bases, E. crystagalli has been shown to contain the ring c unsaturated alkaloid crystamine (13). ° E. glauca, E. poeppigiana, and E. variegata from Singapore have been shown to elaborate a number of known alkaloids. ... 

Compounds 32 and 35, isolated by bioassay-guided separation of the methanolic extract of the Indonesian E. variegata, were also found to be moderate inhibitors of the Na"VH exchange system of the arterial smooth muscle cells with MIC s of 1.25 pg/ml each [41].
