E Measuring Temperature

Temperature is most commonly measured using a thermometer constructed of glass. The thermometer has a terminal bulb surmounted by a capillary tube. The bulb contains mercury or some other suitable liquid, which is free to expand up the capillary as the temperature rises. The capillary [Pg.24]

To measure the temperature of a sample, the bulb of the thermometer is totally immersed in the sample (or the thermometer is submerged to an immersion mark) and allowed to stand until the level of liquid in the capillary becomes stationary. The position of the meniscus then is read as the [Pg.24]
