Dummy rod

Tail rods are dummy rods that protrude from the head end of the cylinder (see Figure 3-9). The purpose of the rod is to pressure-balance a piston or to stabilize a particular piston design. Because of the personnel hazard, a guard must be specified and provided. In a tandem cylinder arrangement, the outboard cylinders are driven with a rod similar to the tail rod... 

The vertical holes must be aligned with some care so that the uranimn and control rods will be able to slide freely up and down. This will presumably be checked with dummy rods hung from an overhead frame as the stacking of the graphite progresses. The expansion cracks are to be differentially patterned about the center in accordance with the expected distribution of temperature in the operating plant.

Referring to Fig. 17, the dummy rod 69 may be a flat plate twisted to provide flutes 76 disposed in the form of helix about the rod. Thus, helical channels 77 are provided between adjacent flutes 76 so as to provide a continuous helical passage for the flow of cooling water from one end of the dummy rod 69 to the other. Referring to Fig. 12, the dummy rod or plug 69 is disposed between one end of the uranium rod 22 and the holding plate 70.

Dummy tubes or tie rods with spacers may be located within the pass partition lanes (and between the baffle cuts) in order to ensure maximum bundle penetration by the shell-side fluid. 

The first requisite for practical use was achieved by the synthesis of callosobruchusic acid, and the substitution of a complex hydrocarbon mixture by octadecane. Only the (E) form was active. Synthesis of the two optical forms was also achieved, but both forms showed the same activity as the natural callosobruchusic acid, thus making it impossible to assign the absolute configuration (5). The second requirement has been pursued by selecting different dummies. When an amount of erectin equivalent to that of one female was applied to a glass rod, the male attempted copulation, but did not ejaculate. However, the male did show the insertion and ejaculation behavior with a dummy of aluminum foil tube bearing erectin.

Observation of the Cherenkov radiation from irradiated reactor fuel assemblies is used to obtain qualitative confirmation (attribute testing) of the presence of spent fuel in storage by scanning rows of assemblies from the pool bridge. Characteristic patterns formed by the arrangements of rods and holes in fuel assemblies have to be observed to ensure a valid verification. A well-trained inspector can easily detect the presence of an inactive dummy assembly surrounded by highly active neighbors.

Fig. 76 shows the arrangement of a shear in front of the counter-platen. Prior to shearing the container is shifted on the base frame and the discard retained by the ram. Shearing having been completed, the rod is pulled out of the die using a pair of tongs discard with dummy slide over a chute to a point beside the press.
