Drugs for toxoplasma and pneumocystis pneumonia

Most cases of infection with toxoplasma are self-limiting and do not need specific treatment. For treatment of toxoplasma infection of the eye (which can cause blindness) and general infection in the immunocompromized, the preferred treatment is with a combination of pyrimethamine (a folate antagonist) and sulfadiazine (a sulphonamide). [Pg.170]

Pneumocystis pneumonia can be treated with co-trimoxazole, which is a mixture of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazide (a sulphonamide). Co-trimoxazole is the drug of choice for pneumocystis prophylaxis in immunocompromized patients. Atovaquone is used to treat active infection in those who cannot tolerate co-trimoxazole and prophylac-tically in the immunocompromized. [Pg.170]
