Double acting steam engine

James Watt s double-acting steam engine first used in Britain.

Nevertheless, it was not until 1774 that the first really successful single-acting engine was effected. The orders started to come in to the firm and Watt, with the financial anxiety removed, continued to improve the engine, receiving in 1781 a patent for a double-acting steam engine. 

Simplex Double-Acting Pumps These pumps may be direc t-acting (i.e., direct-connected to a steam cyhnder) or power-driven (through a crank and flywheel from the crosshead of a steam engine).

A two-stage double-acting compressor with water cooled cylinder jackets and intercooler is shown in Figure 7.18(c). Selected dimensional and performance data are in Table 7.7. Drives may be with steam cylinders, turbines, gas engines or electrical motors. A specification form is included in Appendix B. Their factory is an extensive, oblong, three storied building, in the basement of which is a powerful steam engine which performs the double duty of propelling the powdering apparatus, and of driving a double acting air pump connected with their vacuum evaporators. 

Double-acting Watt steam engine from the late 18tb century within a few years of its introduction, Watt s steam engine ousted all existing Newcomen engines because of its far better thermal efficiency.
