Methadone maintenance treatment was established in 1964 in New York City by Vincent Dole and Marie Nyswander. In the initial studies, subjects who were heavily addicted to heroin were evaluated and stabilized on daily methadone doses as inpatients before transfer to an outpatient clinic for continued treatment.
