Disulfiram-like side effect

However, latamoxef possesses rather poor activity against Staphylococcus aureus and, in addition, (11a) was found to occasionally exhibit a disulfiram-like side effect on patients who had drunk alcohol and a bleeding-time prolongation side effect in vitamin K-deficient patients. 

CNS side effects include nystagmus and hallucinations and some of the newer compounds can cause disulfiram like reaction. 

The adverse effects associated with cefazolin are generally similar to those described for penicillins. Cefazolin contains a methylthiodiazolethiol side chain and may further cause hypoprothrombinemia and a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol similar to that seen witli cephalosporins containing the related A-methyl-thiotetrazole side chain.

Sometimes alcoholics are treated with a drug called Antabuse (disulfiram), which prevents the oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetic acid. As a result, acetaldehyde accumulates in the blood, which causes nausea, profuse sweating, headache, dizziness, vomiting, and respiratory difficulties. Because of these unpleasant side effects, the patient is less likely to use alcohol. 

Disulfiram implantation seems to be of little use in most patients. The implant is frequently rejected or poorly absorbed. After implantation of disulfiram the blood level is only rarely comparable to that achieved after oral administration. In addition, carbon disulphide, a metabolite which is regularly found in the expiratory air after oral ingestion of disulfiram, has been found in only one patient out of 62 receiving implantation of disulfiram. Pharmacologically speaking, the implantation thus does not seem to have more than a placebo action (18 ) and the side effects are likely to be irritant rather than toxic.
