Disilyl sulfide

Aldehydes can be converted into thioaldehydes by a similar reaction with bis(trimethylsilyl) sulfide catalyzed by BuLi (equation II). This disilyl sulfide has been used indirectly for conversion of aldehydes into thioaldehydes via boron trisulfide (11, 63). 

Furthermore, sulfides bearing two silyl groups can also be oxidized anodically in methanol to provide the corresponding esters as shown in equation 2321,22. Therefore, the a, a-disilylated sulfide provides a synthon of the anion of C(CO)OMe. 

The efficiency of a bis(disilyl)sulfide for thiolactam synthesis has been explored prior activation of the amide into a Vilsmeier type intermediate was necessary [32].

Trimethyl(trifluoromethyl)silane can be converted into tributyl(trifluoromethyl)tin (40) in quantitative yield by treatment with bis(tributyltin) oxide in tetrahydrofuran under fluoride ion initiation. Tributyl(trifluoromethyl)tin readily trifluoromethylates disilyl sulfides at room temperature giving the corresponding trifluoromethylated di- and trialkylsilancs 41 in high yields. This method provides a new approach for the preparation of silicon-based trifluoro-methylating reagents via transtrifluoromethylation of compounds containing Si — S bonds.

Digermyl sulfide has been used as an intermediate in the preparation of germanethiol (mercaptogermane),2 4 and digermyl ether.5 In view of the utility of disilyl sulfide as an intermediate,6 it seems likely that the germyl analog will be exploited further.
