Discovery and naming

Similar controversies were to plague the discovery and naming of elements 105,106, and 107. lUPAC felt compelled to establish a working group in 1987 to assess claims to priority and to pronounce on nomenclature. By 1994, however, the question of what to call the new human-made elements was still in disarray. 

The work at the GSI laboratory is the most definitive, and our work at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and the work at Dubna will have to be confirmed in order to allow these two groups to be recognized as participants in the discovery and naming of element 110. 

As noted under Discovery and Naming, fluorine can be quite dangerous. If inhaled in small amounts, it causes severe irritation to the respiratory system (nose, throat, and lungs). In larger amounts, it can cause death. The highest recommended exposure to fluorine is one part per million of air over an eight-hour period.
