2 Directed Template Synthesis - Simple Host-Guest Adducts 

The general importance of hydrogen bonds in influencing the complex stabilities of a range of (derivatised) host-guest systems of the above type has since been documented.Other studies using similar procedures resulted in the isolation of 

1 1 and 2 1 complexes between the cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) tetracation and 11 and 12, respectively. The X-ray structures of both these complexes confirm that each of the naphtho units lies within the centre of a tetracationic cyclo-phane. In particular, the successful preparation of the second compound conjured up the prospect of self-assembling structures with a polyrotaxane-like nature. That is, systems that would act as a prototype for the construction of a molecular abacus .
