Dioxygen carriers model systems

NMR, EPR, EXAFS, infrared, resonance Raman, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy should follow. Kinetic and thermodynamic information about the model complexes in comparison to that known for natural systems should be gathered. These concepts were updated in 1999 by Karlin, writing in reference 49. Model studies should provide reasonable bases for hypotheses about a biological structure and its reaction intermediates. Researchers should determine the model s competence in carrying out reactions that mimic metalloprotein chemistry. Using these methods and criteria, researchers may hope to exploit Cu-oxygen systems as practical dioxygen carriers or oxidation catalysts for laboratory and industrial purposes. [Pg.215]

Models for haemoglobin and myoglobin. It has been known for a long time that a range of synthetic Co(n) complexes are able to bind reversibly dioxygen in a manner related to the natural systems (Basolo, Hoffman Ibers, 1975 McLendon Martell, 1976). However, similar complexes of iron do not normally function as 02 carriers - rather oxidation to Fe(m)... [Pg.237]

Newton and Hall [175] performed ab initio calculations on dioxygen complexes of Co and Fe porphyrins, which are models for natural oxygen carriers. The Co-O system is best described as a superoxocobalt(III)... [Pg.23]

Dioxygen complexes of the transition metal chelates have received considerable attention especially as model compounds in the study of the reversible oxygenation mechanisms in biological systems. The study of the reversible oxygen-carriers is of very importance in understanding certain aspects of bioinorganic chemistry and to obtain ultrapure oxygen by unconventional methods Cl-4j. ... [Pg.295]

Dioxygen (O2) adducts of metal complexes have been extensively investigated with vibrational spectroscopy because of their importance as models for oxygen carriers in biological systems and as catalytic intermediates in oxidation reactions of organic compounds. [Pg.1033]
