To 200 ml. of redistilled teehnieal grade dimethylformamide (Note 1) in a 1-1. round-bottomed flask are added 150 g. (1 mole) of sodium iodide (Note 2) and 40.5 g. (0.2 mole) of 2,4-dinitro-chlorobenzene (Note 3). The flask is fitted with a reflux condenser, and the red-brown mixture is refluxed for 15 minutes over a free flame arranged to impinge somewhat off-center (Note 4).

In time of war the industries of a country strive to produce as much toluene as possible. The effort results in the production also of increased quantities of other aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly of benzene, and these become cheaper and more abundant. Ammonolysis of aryl halides has been performed under PTC conditions.125 The reaction of 2,4-dinitro-chlorobenzene with NH3 (g) in toluene at ambient temperature and pressure gave, in the presence of 10% TBAB and after 3 h, 2,4-dinitroaniline in 16% yield (0.6% in the absence of TBAB). The reaction was complete after 24 h but the product final yield was not reported.125...

According to Davis (Ref 6), the chlorine in dinitrochlorbenzene is active, while that in monochlorbenzene is unreactive. It yields di-nitrophenol by hydrolysis, dinitroaniline by reaction with ammonia, and dinitromethyl-aniline by reaction with methylamine. These and similar materials inay be nitrated to produce expls, because introduction of a third nitrogroup is done very easily after the chlorine has been replaced by a more strongly ortho-para orienting group. Tetryl, as well as hexanitrodiphenyl-amine, have been produced starting with dinitro-chlorobenzene...
