Picramic acid or 4,6-dinitro-2-aminophenol (m. p. 169-179°C) forms dark red crystals, readily soluble in benzene and acetic acid, but difficult to dissolve in other organic solvents. 

Dinitro-2-aminophenol, also known by the trivial name picramic acid, has two nearly identical values reported for the solid78,79. The agreement between them is encouraging. The enthalpy of reaction 2 is ca 5 kJmol-1, given the —232.7 3.1 kJmol-1 reported for the corresponding deaminated species, 2,4-dinitrophenol.

Note Its structure as 2,6-dinitro-3-amino-isomer was established by Borsche Feske (Ref 3). Prior to this, some investigators considered it as 2, 4-dinitro-3-aminophenol [See Beii i3,(137)]. The correct formula is given in Beil 13,[216]...
