4-dimethylaminobenzylidene-rhodanine

Dimethylaminobenzylidene-rhodanine (or rhodanine) reagent (for formula see silver, Section 3.6, reaction 11) red-violet precipitate in neutral or faintly acid solution. Silver, mercury, and palladium salts give coloured compounds with the reagent and must therefore be absent. 

Dimethylaminobenzylidene-rhodanine (0.3% in acetone). Dissolve 30 mg commercial 4-dimethylaminobenzylidene-rhodanine reagent in 10 ml acetone. 

Silver ions are completely retained from sea water by Chelex-100 and Permutit S 1005 (chapter 2.3.3 56)). They may also be extracted with a solution of dithizone in chloroform (chapter 2.3.7 78)) and concentrated by p-dimethylaminobenzylidene-rhodanine on silica gel (chapter 2.3.12 92)). 

Many organic spectrophotometric reagents for Pd incorporate sulphur as a ligand atom. Apart from dithizone and thio-Michler s ketone, which have been discussed above, examples include the thiourea derivatives [33-36] p-dimethylaminobenzylidene-rhodanine (rhodanine) (e = 4.9 10 ) [37] and its derivatives [38], thiodibenzoylmethane [39,40], and thiosemicarbazone derivatives [41—47].

The sensitive and selective test with />-dimethylaminobenzylidene-rhodanine (page 421), can be easily applied to the detection of silver in alloys, metal coatings, jewelry, etc.
