Dimethyl pyrosulfate

A mixture of dimethyl sulfate with SO is probably dimethyl pyrosulfate [10506-59-9] CH2OSO2OSO2OCH2, and, with chlorobenzene, it yields the 4,4 -dichlorodiphenylsulfone (153). Trivalent rare earths can be separated by a slow release of acid into a solution of rare earth chelated with an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid agent and iodate anion. As dimethyl sulfate slowly hydrolyzes and pH decreases, each metal is released from the chelate in turn and precipitates as the iodate, resulting in improved separations (154).

Pyrosulfate (dlsulfate, 8207 ") has been used for synthesis of aryl sulfate esters from the corresponding phenols (9 ). A high yield of phenyl sulfate was obtained when phenol was heated with potassium dlsulfate In dimethyl- or dlethylanlllne. Morphlne-3-sulfate ester was Isolated from an aqueous mixture of morphine, potassium hydroxide and potassium dlsulfate after 8 h at room temperature (9 ). 

Reaction of an alkene with an excess of SO3 gives a cyclic sulfonate-sulfate anhydride, also referred to as carbyl sulfate or pyrosulfate (eq 5). This carbyl sulfate is formed by a slow insertion of SO3 into the intermediate -sultone. The complex of sulfur trioxIde with dimethyl sulfide reacts with alkenes and alkynes to afford sulfobetaines in good yields (eq 6). These sulfobetaines are produced by nucleophilic attack of the dimethyl sulfide on the initially formed -sultones.
