III. Structural Limitations - Few structural features have been reported which prevent dianion formation. Even benzoic acid can be metalated by proton abstraction17 ( eq l) or by metal-halogen exchange18 (eq 2). All three toluic acids form dianions, and dimethyl benzoic acids (eq 3) can be selectively metalated and alkylated.19 Ortho, meta and para methyl groups of dimethylbenzoic acids react in the order o>p>m. 

In a round-bottom flask (100 mL) place 2,4-dimethyl-benzoic acid (3.0 g, 0.02 moll, anhydrous potassium carbonate (3.3 g, 0.024 mol) and a small magnetic flea. In the fume cupboard and wearing protective gloves, carefully weigh out dimethyfsulphate (2.8 g. 0.022 mol)... 

Obtain a pair of solids whose melting points are within 1 °C of one another and determine whether they indeed depress one another s melting points. Some possible examples are 3-furoic acid and benzoic acid, 1-naphthylacetic acid and 2,5-dimethyl benzoic acid, frans-cinnamic acid and 2-furoic acid, 2-methoxybenzoic acid and malic acid, or dimethyl fumarate, 9-fluorenone, and methyl 4-bromobenzoate. Consult with your instructor regarding these and other possibilities.
