Dillon, Fleet

Aunt Julie is an old woman, somewhere in her eighties. Her mother had six children, all by different men. Aunt Julie was the oldest, by a white man named Perry. Her sister Ellen was by Tom Burch, another white man, who lived on a nearby place. Adeline was by Glowers, a colored man. Jack was by Sam Thomas, a colored man. Fleet was by George Dillon, a colored man, and Baily Miller was by Lewis Miller. [Pg.117]

After Aunt Julie s mother had her by this poor white man Perry, she lived with Tom Burch. Tom Burch owned a plantation across the river, and all of his people were well off. Aunt Julie s mother, Pennie, had a baby by Tom Burch who was named Ellen. Pennie had another baby by George Dillon, a half-white man from near Wamerton. She had another baby after that by Sam Thompson, a black man. The last two children. Fleet Dillon and Jack Thompson, were bom after the Surrender. Pennie was like most half-white women—when she was young and real pretty, she had children by white men. Then she had children... [Pg.144]

You will recall Pennie Brock, who lived across the river up near the Mississippi state line. She had Aunt Julie, called Julie Brock, by Perry, a white Overseer. She had Ellen by Tom Burch. She had Fleet Dillon by George Dillon, a half-white man and Jack Thompson by Sam Thompson, a black man. Jack Thompson was her last baby. The next to the last was Bailey Miller, who was born to her by Lewis Miller. [Pg.156]
