In addition to the polymeric rhodium catalysts previously discussed, monomeric rhodium systems prepared from [Rh(CO)2Cl]2 by addition of strong acid (HC1 or HBF4) and Nal in glacial acetic acid have also been shown to be active homogeneous shift catalysts (80). The active species is thought to be an anionic iodorhodium carbonyl species, dihydrogen being produced by the reduction of protons with concomitant oxidation of Rh(I) to Rh(III) [Eq. (18)], and carbon dioxide by nucleophilic attack of water on a Rh(III)-coordinated carbonyl [Eq. (19)]. [Pg.85]

Scheme 3.4 The heterolytic splitting of dihydrogen at Ru(ll) to give a hydridic-protonic bond, as proposed by Chu et al. [55] in the mechanism of the homogeneous hydrogenation of carbon dioxide.
As shown in Figure 1, the next step in the catalytic cycle of carbon dioxide hydrogenation is either reductive elimination of formic acid from the transition-metal formate hydride complex or CT-bond metathesis between the transition-metal formate complex and dihydrogen molecule. In this section, we will discuss the reductive elimination process. Activation barriers and reaction energies for different reactions of this type are collected in Table 3. [Pg.94]

Another factor to be investigated in the metathesis process is the effect of bases in the reaction media. Bases such as triethylamine are added in the experimental conditions to stabilize the formic acid product because otherwise the product is thermodynamically less stable than the separate carbon dioxide and dihydrogen reactants. As discussed above, the o-bond methathesis involves the heterolytic H-H bond fission, which would be accelerated by the presence of the base. This effect was theoretically investigated in the four-center o-bond metathesis between RhOn1-... [Pg.99]
