Diffusion Discharge

Because the terminal ganglia are located within the innervated tissue, there is typically little divergence in the parasympathetic system compared to the sympathetic system. In many organs, the ratio of preganglionic fibers to postganglionic fibers is 1 1. Therefore, the effects of the parasympathetic system tend to be more discrete and localized, with only specific tissues stimulated at any given moment, compared to the sympathetic system in which a more diffuse discharge is possible. [Pg.97]

These subsidiary Directives mainly concern direct industrial discharges into the aquatic environment. However, in certain cases it will be necessary to devise a comprehensive approach in order to eliminate pollution caused by certain disubstanoes discharged into the different environment (water, air, soil) or by indirect or diffuse discharges. [Pg.246]

Whereas the emission spectrum of the hydrogen atom shows only one series, the Balmer series (see Figure 1.1), in the visible region the alkali metals show at least three. The spectra can be excited in a discharge lamp containing a sample of the appropriate metal. One series was called the principal series because it could also be observed in absorption through a column of the vapour. The other two were called sharp and diffuse because of their general appearance. A part of a fourth series, called the fundamental series, can sometimes be observed. [Pg.213]

Flow Nozzles. A flow nozzle is a constriction having an eUiptical or nearly eUiptical inlet section that blends into a cylindrical throat section as shown in Figure 8. Nozzle pressure differential is normally measured between taps located 1 pipe diameter upstream and 0.5 pipe diameters downstream of the nozzle inlet face. A nozzle has the approximate discharge coefficient of an equivalent venturi and the pressure drop of an equivalent orifice plate although venturi nozzles, which add a diffuser cone to proprietary nozzle shapes, are available to provide better pressure recovery. [Pg.60]

A number of chemiluminescent reactions have been studied by producing key reactants through pulsed electric discharge, by microwave dissociation, or by observing the reactions of atoms and free radicals produced in the inner cone of a laminar flame as they diffuse into the flame s cool outer cone (182,183). These are either combination reactions or atom-transfer reactions involving transfer of chlorine (184) or oxygen atoms (181,185—187), the latter giving excited oxides. [Pg.270]

There are three types of Hquid content in a packed bed (/) in a submerged bed, there is Hquid filling the larger channels, pores, and interstitial spaces (2) in a drained bed, there is Hquid held by capillary action and surface tension at points of particle contact, or near-contact, as weU as a zone saturated with Hquid corresponding to a capillary height in the bed at the Hquid discharge face of the cake and (3) essentially undrainable Hquid exists within the body of each particle or in fine, deep pores without free access to the surface except perhaps by diffusion or compaction. [Pg.399]

The cathodic reaction is the reduction of iodine to form lithium iodide at the carbon collector sites as lithium ions diffuse to the reaction site. The anode reaction is lithium ion formation and diffusion through the thin lithium iodide electrolyte layer. If the anode is cormgated and coated with PVP prior to adding the cathode fluid, the impedance of the cell is lower and remains at a low level until late in the discharge. The cell eventually fails because of high resistance, even though the drain rate is low. [Pg.535]
