Diffraction patterns oriented

Powder diffraction patterns have three main features that can be measured t5 -spacings, peak intensities, and peak shapes. Because these patterns ate a characteristic fingerprint for each crystalline phase, a computer can quickly compare the measured pattern with a standard pattern from its database and recommend the best match. Whereas the measurement of t5 -spacings is quite straightforward, the determination of peak intensities can be influenced by sample preparation. Any preferred orientation, or presence of several larger crystals in the sample, makes the interpretation of the intensity data difficult. [Pg.4]

The F-actin helix has 13 molecules of G-actin in six turns of the helix, repeating every 360 A. Oriented gels of actin fibers yield x-ray fiber diffraction patterns to about 6 A resolution. Knowing the atomic structure of G-actin it was possible for the group of Ken Holmes to determine its orientation in the F-actin fiber, and thus arrive at an atomic model of the actin filament that best accounted for the fiber diffraction pattern. [Pg.293]

Surface-sensitive diffraction is, for the most part, restricted to analysis of surfaces of single crystals and overlayers and films on such surfaces. If a polycrystalline sample is illuminated using a beam of low-energy electrons, each crystallite surfiice exposed will create its own diffraction pattern, all of which will be superimposed on the fluorescent screen detector.
