Difficulties with Discontinuities

In practice, discontinuous systems are often solved without localizing the points of discontinuity explicitly. This may lead to an inefficient behavior or even to a failure of the integration caused by an order reduction of the method and wrong error estimates. [Pg.194]

This effect is demonstrated by means of the truck driving over a curb  [Pg.194]

Example 6.1.1 (Truck driving over a curb) We assume that the truck drives with t = 15 m/s after 2 m over a curb with a height o/0.05 m. This leads to discontinuities at t 0.1333 m and at t = t + (023 - ai2)/v 0.4333 s due to the time delay between the wheels. [Pg.195]

Integrating with MATLAB s integrator ODE45 leads to the critical steps given in Tab. 6.1. ERR/TOL is the estimated local error increment divided by the scaled required tolerance and thus should be less than one. Fig. 6.1 shows some simulation results. [Pg.195]

In addition to the high effort necessary to obtain a solution one cannot trust in the results The estimation of the error as well as the method itself is based on the assumption that the solution and its derivatives are continuous up to a certain order. If this assumption is not fulfilled the error estimation is not valid. [Pg.195]

Benzodiazepines are used commonly in SAD however, there are limited data supporting their use. Clonazepam has been effective for social anxiety, fear, and phobic avoidance, and it reduced social and work disability during acute treatment.58 Long-term treatment is not desirable for many SAD patients owing to the risk of withdrawal and difficulty with discontinuation, cognitive side effects, and lack of effect on depressive symptoms. Benzodiazepines may be useful for acute relief of physiologic symptoms of anxiety when used concomitantly with antidepressants or psychotherapy. Benzodiazepines are contraindicated in SAD patients with alcohol or substance abuse or history of such. [Pg.618]

Benzodiazepines are prescribed commonly for SAD. Clonazepam is the most extensively studied benzodiazepine for the treatment of generalized SAD. " Clonazepam improved fear and phobic avoidance, interpersonal sensitivity, fears of negative evaluation, and disability measures. " Adverse effects included sexual dysfunction, unsteadiness, dizziness, and poor concentration. " Clonazepam is often prescribed in conjunction with an antidepressant, psychotherapy, or both for initial symptom relief. Comorbid alcohol or substance abuse are contraindications to the use of benzodiazepines. Other limitations of clonazepam therapy include lack of efficacy in depression and difficulty with discontinuation. Because of the risk of dependency, benzodiazepines should be reserved for patients at a low risk of substance abuse, those who require rapid relief of symptoms, or those who have not responded to other therapies. [Pg.1302]

Discontinuous methods are performed in conventional separating funnels in one or more steps. In ultratrace analyses, tapered or specially profiled quartz tubes are recommended because of their easier cleaning (more compact size), the introduction of less contaminating material, and easier centrifugation in the case of difficulties with phase separation. Shaking must be continued until equilibrium is reached, which may last seconds, minutes, or (rarely) hours, depending on the physicochemical properties of the system more than 2-5 min requires a mechanical shaker. Microscale extraction carried out in autosampler tubes, followed by direct automatic introduction of the organic phase into the atomizer, is recommended. [Pg.562]

The adverse events most commonly associated with discontinuation were somnolence, fatigue, or ataxia (6%) anorexia (3%) difficulty concentrating (2%) difficulty with memory, mental slowing, nausea/vomiting (2%) and weight loss (1%). Many of these adverse events were dose-related. [Pg.1216]

The second factor that affects performance in discontinuously reinforced FMCs is fiber length. This has an effect primarily on the ease with which the composite can be manufactured. Very long fibers can create difficulties with methods used to create discontinuously reinforced FMCs and can result in nonuniform mechanical properties. The third factor is also related to fiber geometry, namely, the fiber shape. Recall that the... [Pg.106]

To allow algebraic equations to be used to locate ATm, assume that the heat capacities can be approximated by piecewise constant functions of temperature, with discontinuities at temperature breakpoints TBRj. Then for each exchanger, Arm can occur only at either end or at a breakpoint location inside the exchanger. However, a remaining difficulty is that since the intermediate stream temperatures are not known before the resilience test, the breakpoint locations are also not known a priori. [Pg.34]

Currently, there are no treatment or rehabilitation options for people who use melatonin. It is not known if long-term users may have difficulty with sleeping or other side effects when they quit taking melatonin supplements. Discontinuing the use of melatonin after shortterm use, such as for adjusting to jet lag, has not proved to be difficult or to cause any side effects. [Pg.305]

Fleadache may precede the onset of labyrinthine dysfunction, followed immediately by nausea, vomiting, and difficulty with balance, which develop acutely and persist for 1-2 weeks. The acute stage is followed by manifestations of chronic labyrinthitis, in which the patient has difficulty when attempting to walk or make sudden movements ataxia is prominent. The chronic phase persists for 2 months. Recovery may require 12-18 months most patients have some permanent residual damage. Although there is no specific treatment for the vestibular deficiency, early drug discontinuation may permit recovery before irreversible damage of the hair cells. [Pg.756]

Physical traps are generally associated with discontinuities in the lattice, such as voids, particle-matrix interfaces, and grain boundaries. A hydrogen atom near a purely physical trap is not specifically attracted but, once trapped, has difficulty escaping. Most traps can probably be considered to have both attractive and physical characteristics. An edge dislocation is a good example of a mixed trap with both sets of characteristics the tensile stress field provides some attractive character, while the core region provides some physical character. [Pg.118]

Surface Tension Solution in Level Set (LS) Methods As for the discontinuous Heaviside function, there will be numerical difficulties with discretization of the singular Dirac delta function. This function is therefore smoothed over the interface thickness and commonly defined as... [Pg.2474]

As far as the difficulties with the thermal overload motor switch are concerned, it has to be remembered that these mechanisms are generally based on a bimetallic foil, although different types exist (e.g. the more expensive quick trip type). The thermal behaviour of the motor is different from that of the bimetallic device and, in particular, a switch regulated for continuous duty motors does not behave as well for discontinuous duty motors as those used for valves. For this reason, the curve interruption time-current of the latter must be lower than that of the former (about 80 per cent). As already mentioned, however, it is difficult to satisfy the two specifications generally imposed by the plant operator ... [Pg.137]

The difficulties arising in the integration of ODEs with discontinuities are often circumvented by using integration methods with fixed step size or low order. The first approach has the drawback that the error is not controlled. Both approaches have the drawback that they may be very inefficient. [Pg.195]

The form factor affects both fuel and capital costs since there Is a limitation on maximum channel power output thus the number of channels In the core varies with the form factor. In assessing the optimum discharge irradiation, this effect must be included. To do this, it is assumed that the electrical power output is fixed and the core size is adjusted in proportion to the form factor variation. The difficulty with this approach Is that, for the practical situation to retain core symmetry, channels must, in general, be added In groups of 8 so that the plot of generating cost versus discharge irradiation has discontinuities. [Pg.100]

A typical method for thermal analysis is to solve the energy equation in hydrodynamic films and the heat conduction equation in solids, simultaneously, along with the other governing equations. To apply this method to mixed lubrication, however, one has to deal with several problems. In addition to the great computational work required, the discontinuity of the hydrodynamic films due to asperity contacts presents a major difficulty to the application. As an alternative, the method of moving point heat source integration has been introduced to conduct thermal analysis in mixed lubrication. [Pg.120]
