The reactions of coordinately unsaturated complex ions using a combination of ES and CID may be a rich area of gas-phase coordination chemistry in the future. The diethylenetriamine (dien) platinum(II) complexes have been investigated using this method (194).

The X-ray structure of another trinucleotide complex of platinum, Pt(di-en)[d(ApGpA)] (dien = diethylenetriamine), was also reported by Reedijk and co-workers [43b]. In this complex Pt binds only to N(7) of the central guanine. Unlike the situation in the CpGpG complex, Pt-binding leaves the base stacking undisturbed.
