5- -diethyl phosphorothiolothionate

When saccharin is treated with diethyl phosphorothiolothionate, the 3-ethylmercapto compound is obtained, rather than the expected organophosphorus compound (77 ACS(B)460). Treatment of saccharin with phosphorus pentoxide and amines gives 3-(substituted-amino)-1,2-benzisothiazole 1,1-dioxides, via an intermediate phosphate (81ZN(B)1640). Reduction of saccharin with zinc and hydrochloric acid gives 2,3-dihydro-l,2-benzisothiazole 1,1-dioxide, the method being used to estimate saccharin in foodstuffs (75MI41701). 

Aromatic and aliphatic thiols are oxidized by quaternary ammonium dichromate salts to disulphides (8, 13]. Yields are very good, even with the oxidative dimerization of diethyl phosphorothiolothionate to the corresponding disulphide (79%).

The most important examples of compounds used specifically as acaricides but possessing a weak insecticidal action are S-(4-chlorophenylthiomethyl)-diethyl phosphorothiolothionate (carbophention, 32) and its 3,5-dichlorphenyl analogue (phenkapton, 33). These compounds are very similar to each other, but have been developed by two independent research groups (Fancher, 1954 Gatzi and Muller, 1955).
