To a solution of 0.40 mol of butyllithium in about 280 ml of hexane were added 280 ml of dry THF with cooling below -10°C. Subsequently 0.40 mol of 1,1-diethoxy--2-propyne (see Chapter V, Exp. 28) was introduced in 15 min at -30 to -10°C. To the solution obtained was then added in 15 min with cooling at about -15°C 0.40 mol of chloromethyl ethyl ether (note 2). After the addition stirring was continued for 1 h without cooling. The mixture was then shaken with concentrated ammonium chloride solution and the ethereal layer was separated off. The aqueous layer was extracted twice with diethyl ether. After drying the ethereal solutions over magnesium sulfate the diethyl ether was evaporated in a water-pump vacuum. 

A series of methoxy compounds have been prepared from 2-hydroxy-3-(a-hydroxybenzyl)pyrazines and dimethyl sulfate (1045), and 2-benzyl-3,6-dihydroxy-pyrazine with diethyl sulfate and sodium ethoxide gave the 3,6-diethoxy derivative (1066). 

Methylation of 2-hydroxy-3-7V-phenylcarbamoylpyrazine with dimethyl sulfate and potassium carbonate in boiling acetone gave l-methyl-2-oxo-3-A -phenylcarbamoyl-1,2-dihydropyrazine and the 3-(A -methyl-Af-phenylcarbamoyl) analogue was prepared likewise (1055). Similar methylation of 2-hydroxy-3-(o-methylaminophenyl)pyrazine produced 1 -methyl-3-(o-methylaminophenyl)-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyrazine (1055). A series of 24iydroxy-3-(a-hydroxybenzyl)pyrazines has been methylated with dimethyl sulfate in aqueous sodium hydroxide to the 2-methoxy analogues (1045) and 2-benzyl-3,6-dihydroxy-5-methylpyrazine with diethyl sulfate and sodium ethoxide formed 2-benzyl-3,6-diethoxy-6-methylpyrazine (1066). 

Obtained by reaction of dimethyl sulfate with 2,4-diethoxy-3,6-dihydroxy-a-methoxyacetophenone in the presence of potassium carbonate in refluxing acetone for 2.5 h [4993], (27%) [4867] or for 12 h [4854]. 

A mixture of N,N-dimethyl-2-benzyl-4,5-diethoxyphenethylamine, dimethyl sulfate, NaOH, and water heated 3 hrs. on a steam bath until evolution of trimethylamine ceases —2-benzyl-4,5-diethoxy styrene. Y 75-80%. J. Gardent, Bl. 1960, 114.
