Diazepam generic name

The drug diazepam may serve as an illustrative example. Chemically, this compound is called 7-chloro-l,3-dihy-dro-1 -methyl-5-phenyl-2H-l, 4-benzo-diazepin-2-one, a term too unwieldy for everyday use. A simpler name is diazepam. This is not a legally protected name but a generic (nonproprietary) name. An INN (= international nonproprietary name) is a generic name that has been agreed upon by an international commission. 

Many drugs mentioned in this book have three names a chemical name that describes the molecule, a generic or common name, and a brand name owned by a company that markets the drug. For example, Valium is the brand name of a tranquilizer whose generic name is diazepam. The chemical name of this same drug is 7-chloroT,3-dihydro-l-methyl-5-phenyl-2HT,4-benzodi-azepin-2-one. 

Because chemical names are long and cumbersome and useful only to chemists, we do not give them. We have tried to stick to generic names, which are printed in lowercase letters and followed, when relevant, by the most common brand names, enclosed in parentheses and capitalized- Thus diazepam (Valium). 

The generic names diazepam, nitrazepam, flur-azepam are all of benzodiazepines. Their proprietary names are Valium, Mogadon and Dalmane respectively. Names ending in -olol are adrenoceptor blockers in -pril are ACE-inhibitors in -floxacin are quinolone antimicrobials. 

As one example, consider the names ofValium (brand name) The generic name is diazepam, and its chemical name is 7-chloro-l, 3-dihydro-l-mcthyl-5-phenyl-2H-l, 4- bcnzodiazepin-2 -one.
