Development needs, exposure

The extent of accommodation and characterization of uncertainty in exposure assessment must necessarily be balanced against similar considerations with respect to hazard, since the outcome of any risk assessment is a function of comparison of the two. If, for example, there is limited information to inform quantitatively on hazard and, as a result, a need to rely on defaults, there is limited benefit to be gained in developing the exposure analysis such that any increase in certainty is cancelled by uncertainties of greater magnitude associated with quantification of critical hazard, as a basis for a complete risk assessment. 

Consequently, this document is intended not only for those who carry out the assessments, the exposure assessors, but also for those who incorporate the results into the assessment of risk, the risk assessors, and those who must rely on the final results to make decisions, the risk managers. The introduction of vocabulary and criteria is intended to facilitate communication between these groups or, in the case where one person performs one or more of these roles, to facilitate a more comprehensive thought process. It is hoped that these hallmarks of data quality can be incorporated early on in the development of exposure assessments and can allow risk assessors and risk managers to more quickly and clearly identify aspects of assessments that need more work or further justification. 

Additionally, organotin mercaptides can act as antioxidants, as they can sequester free-radical degradation mechanisms (48). The one drawback of mercaptide-based tin stabilizers is the discoloration of the sulfur after exposure to uv-radiation. Special precautions or formulations need to be developed for outdoor apphcations. 

Antioxidants are used to retard the reaction of organic materials with atmospheric oxygen. Such reaction can cause degradation of the mechanical, aesthetic, and electrical properties of polymers loss of flavor and development of rancidity ia foods and an iacrease ia the viscosity, acidity, and formation of iasolubles ia lubricants. The need for antioxidants depends upon the chemical composition of the substrate and the conditions of exposure. Relatively high concentrations of antioxidants are used to stabilize polymers such as natural mbber and polyunsaturated oils. Saturated polymers have greater oxidative stabiUty and require relatively low concentrations of stabilizers. Specialized antioxidants which have been commercialized meet the needs of the iadustry by extending the useflil Hves of the many substrates produced under anticipated conditions of exposure. The sales of antioxidants ia the United States were approximately 730 million ia 1990 (1,2). 

Since the acetal exists in equiUbtium with the aldehyde, it is possible for the aldehyde to be released when water is added in a mixed drink, changing the balance and giving a burst of freshness to a mixed drink. Ethyl esters of terpene alcohols in citms oils and other botanicals, plus the ethyl esters of fatty and volatile acids, are formed during prolonged exposure to ethyl alcohol. Certain beverage alcohol products that need to contain milk, eggs, or other protein containing materials must be developed carefully and the added flavors must be considered to prevent the precipitation of the protein and separation of the product.
