After introduction of the process of ammonia-soda by Solvay, the soda industry underwent rapid expansion around 1865. In 1880 Solvay founded the Deutsche Solvay Werke AG and began development of a large plant in Bernburg. The production of sulfuric acid was expanded on the basis of the lead chamber process a few years later.
