Kirkbride, superintendent of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane, writes The general proposition that truly recent cases of insanity are commonly very curable. .. may be considered as fully established. Comments Albert Deutsch The belief. . . that insanity was easily curable if treated early enough rapidly impressed itself on the public and professional mind and soon reached the plane of established, immutable dogma. But what of the psychiatric profession as a whole Did it raise any objections to the spread of this fallacy On the contrary except for a very few instances, it not only subscribed wholeheartedly to the current misconceptions, but stimulated and strengthened them as best it could. ...
